The Dunkirk Carnival runs from January 28th to March 18th and is the pre-eminent springtime event in Northern France with roots going back hundreds of years.
In earlier times when the towns main industry was fishing Shrove Tuesday was a day when ship owners laid on a banquet for their fishermen before they set of for Icelandic waters. Today it is marked by a colourful procession, featuring the giant figure Reuze Papa, and a series of celebrations balls over the carnival period.
